Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer 2005 R1 is a Windows service that integrates Microsoft SQL Server 2005 with the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) framework. It enables application-consistent, point-in-time snapshots of SQL Server databases by coordinating with VSS-aware backup applications. During a backup, the writer briefly freezes database I/O, ensures transactional consistency, and then allows the backup tool to capture a shadow copy without taking databases offline. After the snapshot is created, normal operations resume.
The VSS Writer does not perform backups by itself; instead, it provides the hooks and metadata that Windows Server Backup, System Center Data Protection Manager, and third-party tools use to discover databases and orchestrate VSS full or copy backups and corresponding restores. It supports both standalone and clustered SQL Server deployments and is installed with SQL Server 2005 as the “SQL Server VSS Writer” service (service name: SQLWriter). Keeping this service running is recommended if you rely on VSS-based backups, as it has minimal overhead and is required for consistent snapshots.
Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer 2005 R1 is developed by Microsoft. The most popular version of this product among our users is 9.0. The name of the program executable file is ssmsee.exe.
